Swiss Auto Club Rejects Basel Bike Plan as Cities Tackle Cycling Issues
The Automobile Club of Switzerland (ACS) has formally rejected the entire part‑plan for bike routes in Basel‑Stadt, arguing that the proposal lacks concrete details and may miss legal deadlines. ACS criticised the Department of Construction and Transport for providing only a PDF with a route map and minimal explanations, stating, “If the department invites 100 organisations to a consultation and only delivers a PDF, the ACS must consequently reject the whole part‑plan.” The club also warned of possible conflicts with pedestrians and called for a comprehensive metropolitan traffic‑infrastructure concept rather than a limited city‑center plan.
In the historic old town of Schaffhausen, illegal bike parking and unclear regulations have sparked local debate. The Social Democratic Party (SP) is proposing a city‑wide cycling concept that would introduce additional bike‑parking facilities, new through‑traffic rules, and an “old‑town bike vignette” to manage usage and reduce conflicts.
Both stories reflect growing tensions in Swiss cities over how to integrate cycling infrastructure with existing urban traffic and pedestrian needs.
