Swiss consumers spend over 12 billion francs annually abroad
Swiss consumers are spending over 12 billion francs annually on foreign goods, according to recent consumption data. This total includes approximately 9.3 billion francs in traditional cross-border shopping and roughly 2.8 billion francs in direct online imports from abroad. This represents more than 11.5 percent of the total Swiss retail market.
Driven by rising domestic costs such as health insurance premiums, rent, and energy prices, many households view shopping in neighboring countries like Germany and France as a financial necessity. In the food and beverage segment alone, over 4.1 billion francs flow to neighboring countries each year.
A study by the University of St. Gallen (HSG) highlights that cross-border spending reached 9.26 billion francs last year, with consumers shopping more frequently and spending more per trip. While this provides economic benefits to border towns, it also creates local challenges. In the German municipality of Jestetten, residents report increased traffic congestion, littering, and a loss of local identity due to the influx of shoppers from Swiss cantons such as Schaffhausen and Zurich.
