Swiss economy faces rising unemployment and lower consumer sentiment

Switzerland is experiencing a downturn in both consumer sentiment and employment metrics. According to data from the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), the consumer sentiment index dropped to -36 points in June 2026, reflecting pessimism across all sub-indices including expected economic development and personal financial outlooks.

Unemployment figures also rose in July, with the total number of unemployed persons increasing by 1,525 compared to the previous month, reaching 139,276. This represents a 7.8 percent increase compared to the same month last year, bringing the unemployment rate to 3.0 percent.

Within the banking sector, the situation is particularly acute in the Canton of Zurich. Unemployment among bankers in the canton has risen by 33 percent compared to the previous year, with 1,574 bankers registered at employment centers. This rise coincides with a significant decrease in job openings for the banking industry across Switzerland, which saw a 60 percent decline in vacancies compared to the previous year. Factors such as increased automation and AI implementation in banking services are noted as contributing pressures on the sector's workforce.
