Swiss Federal Roads Office studies traffic lights for 120 highway entrances
The Swiss Federal Roads Office (Astra) is studying the installation of regulation lights at more than 120 highway entrances across the country to combat network saturation. The goal is to manage the number of vehicles entering motorways simultaneously to maintain traffic flow on major axes.
Internal documents indicate that this strategy deliberately accepts the creation of queues at access ramps to protect highway fluidity. This approach has raised concerns that traffic congestion will simply be shifted to cantonal and local roads. In the canton of Zurich, technical examinations are underway for ramps on the A1 and A15. Additionally, authorities are evaluating the possibility of opening emergency lanes to traffic during peak periods on 24 different national road sections.
