Swiss financial sector faces regulatory shifts and workforce reductions

The Swiss financial sector is experiencing significant shifts regarding capital regulation and workforce management. Reports indicate that members of a parliamentary commission may favor UBS by allowing the bank to potentially reduce its core tier 1 capital by approximately $10 billion USD. While the bank might be required to increase its extended equity (AT1), critics, including legal expert Corinne Zellweger-Gutknecht, warn that this could increase risks for taxpayers.

Simultaneously, major Swiss financial institutions are reporting high profits alongside substantial job cuts. UBS is undergoing a large-scale integration of Credit Suisse, resulting in approximately 3,000 planned layoffs. Raiffeisen has announced the reduction of up to 180 positions to lower costs despite rising profits. In the insurance sector, the merger of Helvetia and Baloise is expected to lead to up to 1,800 job losses as the group seeks higher efficiency.

Additionally, Zürcher Kantonalbank (ZKB) is facing scrutiny from politicians and risk experts due to its increased international activities in wealth management and commodity sectors. Critics argue these expansions deviate from its mandate as a state bank and increase operational risks.
