Swiss Football Association uses Footuro project to protect youth player investments
The Swiss Football Association (FS Švajcarske) utilizes a project called ‘Footuro’ to protect its investment in youth players. Under this system, players in younger selections sign development contracts, representing an estimated annual investment of approximately 25,000 Swiss francs per player. If a player chooses to switch national representation, the association can legally seek financial compensation to recoup training and development costs.
In the case of Alessandro Romano, who played 34 matches for Swiss youth selections since 2021, the potential compensation is estimated at around 100,000 euros. Romano, who is of Italian descent, has recently moved toward the Italian national team setup.
Simultaneously, the Football Association of Serbia (FSS) is actively pursuing players with Serbian roots developed in Switzerland. Serbian national team coach Veljko Paunović has reportedly held discussions with talents Andrej Vasović and Mladen Mijajlović. Vasović, a striker for Club Brugge, and Mijajlović, who plays for Freiburg, are both highly regarded prospects within the Swiss youth system who hold Serbian passports.
