Swiss football clubs eye millions in European competition
Swiss football clubs are entering highly lucrative stages of European competition, with significant prize money at stake.
FC Thun has secured a place in the Conference League group stage, which is expected to bring the club at least 3.17 million Swiss francs. The club faces a potential additional one million francs if they succeed in their upcoming Europa League playoff match against Lech Poznan. To assist with player recovery following a heavy schedule, the Swiss Football League (SFL) approved the postponement of Thun's match against Servette.
Similarly, FC St. Gallen is approaching a financially critical phase in the Conference League playoffs against Nordsjaelland. While previous European campaigns often saw travel costs nearly offset the initial UEFA starting fees, the club expects this season to yield a positive financial result. Success in the playoffs and reaching the league stage, combined with revenue from sold-out home matches, is expected to provide a significant net gain for the club.
