Swiss Football League seeks to reverse European decline

Claudius Schäfer, CEO of the Swiss Football League, is addressing a decline in European success following weaker performances from the league’s historically dominant clubs. Data indicates that the valuations of major teams like FC Basel and Young Boys are trailing behind comparable mid-sized European leagues.

While increased competition within the Swiss Super League—evidenced by FC Thun’s recent title win—has boosted attendance and league variety, it has also coincided with the weakening of the top clubs that traditionally secure coefficient points. This decline poses a risk to the league’s financial model, which relies heavily on player trading and consistent European participation.

On a club level, FC Zürich is leading the league in youth development, with U21 players accounting for 25% of total playing minutes. Meanwhile, the Swiss Football League recently intervened to reschedule an FC Zürich match against Sion to 18:00 to alleviate potential travel issues for fans following a dispute regarding train availability.
