Swiss franc and British pound reach record highs against the leu

The Swiss franc and British pound have reached new record highs against the Romanian leu due to increased risk aversion in international markets. Investors are seeking safe-haven assets amid pressures on sovereign debt caused by significant budget deficits.

The British pound rose to nearly 1.95 euro, marking its fifth consecutive historic high. Simultaneously, the Swiss franc fell below the 0.92 franc/euro threshold, driving its value to a record 5.8104 lei.

In Romania, Eurostat reported that the government deficit increased to 9.2% of GDP in the second quarter, up from 5.5% in the first quarter. This data contributed to the Romanian 10-year bond yield rising to 7.22%. Despite these fluctuations, the local monetary market remained stable, with the three-month ROBOR index holding at 6.09%.
