Swiss National Bank maintains 0% interest rate

The Swiss National Bank (SNB) has decided to maintain its key policy rate at 0.00%. Despite recent increases in inflation, which reached 0.8% in August—primarily driven by energy costs—the central bank determined that current levels remain within its target stability range.

In its updated economic outlook, the SNB slightly raised its inflation forecasts, projecting an average inflation rate of 0.7% to 0.8% for the period between 2026 and 2028. The bank also noted improved economic growth prospects.

Following the decision, the Swiss franc experienced notable weakness against major currencies, including the US Dollar and the Euro. The SNB also adjusted its communication regarding foreign exchange interventions; rather than expressing an 'increased readiness' to act, the bank stated it is prepared to intervene in the market 'as needed' to maintain monetary conditions and curb excessive currency appreciation.
