Switzerland rejects food initiative to boost self-sufficiency

Swiss voters have decisively rejected the Ernährungsinitiative (Food Initiative), with 72.5 percent of voters casting a ‘No’ vote. The initiative, led by Franziska Herren, sought to significantly increase the nation’s net self-sufficiency rate from 45 percent to 70 percent within a ten-year period.

Critics and major political parties, including the agricultural association and the food industry, argued that the proposed targets were too ambitious and unrealistic. Opponents campaigned under the slogan ‘My food, my choice – No vegan compulsion’ to highlight concerns regarding dietary mandates. While the initiative failed to pass, it received support from over 27 percent of the electorate, including various youth political groups.

Despite the defeat, Agriculture Minister Guy Parmelin stated that the rejection does not mean no changes are necessary, suggesting that the government remains focused on agricultural sustainability. The debate has highlighted ongoing tensions regarding land use, climate change, and the balance between animal feed production and human food crops.
