Swiss glacier melting reveals bodies of Belgian hikers missing since 1992

The bodies of two Belgian hikers who disappeared in the Swiss Alps in 1992 have been discovered on the Trift Glacier. The discovery was made possible by the progressive melting of the glacier, which has made previously inaccessible areas reachable.

The two individuals went missing on September 4, 1992, after departing from the Weissmieshütte refuge with the intention of reaching the summit of Weissmies. They were reportedly caught in deteriorating weather conditions during their ascent. While a backpack was found in the weeks following their disappearance, no trace of the men was found until now.

Authorities in the Valais canton have recovered identification documents near the remains that suggest the bodies belong to the missing hikers. DNA analysis is currently underway to officially confirm the identities before the remains can be released to their families.
