Swiss grape producers face competition from low-cost imports
Swiss table grape producers are facing significant challenges due to a heavy reliance on low-cost imports. While Switzerland consumes approximately 40,000 tons of table grapes annually, domestic production accounts for only 400 tons, or just 1% of total consumption.
Local producers, such as the Crettenand family in Saillon, Valais, are seeking increased support from consumers, retailers, and policymakers. Many small-scale growers find it difficult to work with large retail networks due to low profit margins and insufficient purchase prices. As a result, much of the domestic produce is sold directly to local customers rather than through major supermarket chains.
