Swiss health insurance premiums and executive pay rise

Swiss health insurance premiums are projected to rise by approximately 4 to 5 percent in 2027. While Federal Councilor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider has set a target to limit the increase in gross costs for outpatient treatments to 4 percent, insiders suggest this cap may be exceeded. A potential relief for premiums is expected in 2028 due to the implementation of uniform financing for outpatient and inpatient services (Efas), which will require cantons to share the burden of outpatient healthcare costs.

Simultaneously, scrutiny regarding executive compensation within the industry continues. An analysis of annual reports reveals that three of the ten largest health insurance companies pay their CEOs salaries approaching or exceeding one million Swiss francs. Notably, Helsana CEO Roman Sonderegger saw a salary increase of approximately 200,000 francs, bringing his total to 996,029 francs. Other high earners include Philomena Colatrella, the outgoing CEO of CSS, with a salary of 998,611 francs, and Sanitas CEO Andreas Schönenberger, who earns 982,506 francs. Helsana defended these figures as “attractive, but clearly market-conform,” citing positive company development and increased insured numbers.
