Switzerland health insurance premiums to rise 5% in 2027
Swiss health insurance premiums are set to rise by an average of 5 percent in 2027, according to the Federal Office of Public Health. This increase brings the average monthly premium for adults to 412 francs.
Regional variations are significant. In Ticino, the average increase is expected to be 3.7 percent, which is lower than the national average, though the canton remains one of the most expensive. In contrast, Valais will see a 5.6 percent increase. Other cantons, such as Jura, Schaffhausen, and Appenzell Innerrhoden, are facing higher-than-average hikes of approximately 5.9 percent.
The rising costs have sparked political debate regarding the sustainability of the current system. Discussions include potential reforms such as a single insurance fund with income-proportional premiums, stricter rules on conflicts of interest for lawmakers involved in healthcare policy, and better control over pharmaceutical and laboratory costs. Some cantons are also exploring measures to limit healthcare provider authorizations and increase subsidies for lower-income populations.
