Swiss healthcare faces outpatient growth and pediatric shortages

Recent reports highlight shifting trends and workforce challenges within the Swiss healthcare system. A study by KPMG, titled ‘Clarity on Healthcare 2026’, indicates that while outpatient treatments in Swiss hospitals are increasing, they are not replacing inpatient services. Instead, outpatient growth is occurring alongside inpatient care, described as ‘ambulant plus stationär’ rather than a replacement. Over a five-year period, outpatient revenue shares rose from 30 to 33 percent, while inpatient shares also grew from 55 to 57 percent.

Simultaneously, a study from the University of Bern reveals significant regional disparities in pediatric care. While Switzerland averages one full-time pediatrician for every 1,600 children, the distribution varies widely by canton. Geneva shows strong coverage with one full-time position per 750 children, whereas Appenzell Ausserrhoden faces a shortage with one position per 4,750 children. Key factors contributing to the pediatric shortage include high administrative burdens, part-time work patterns, and financial risks associated with private practice.
