Stan Wawrinka prepares for retirement at Swiss Indoors

Tennis veteran Stan Wawrinka is set to play his final professional tournament at the Swiss Indoors in Basel. The 41-year-old, who has reached a career-high ranking of world number three, expressed mixed emotions of sadness and satisfaction during a press conference.

Wawrinka’s storied career includes three Grand Slam titles, the 2014 Davis Cup, and an Olympic gold medal in doubles alongside Roger Federer. Reflecting on his journey, he noted that while many players are forced into retirement by injury or ranking, he is grateful to be able to choose his own timing.

In the tournament's opening rounds, fellow Swiss player Mika Brunold made his ATP main draw debut as a lucky loser but was defeated by Portugal’s Nuno Borges in 62 minutes, with a score of 3-6, 1-6.
