Swiss inflation rises to 0.8 percent amid interest rate speculation
Inflation in Switzerland rose unexpectedly to 0.8 percent in August, up from 0.4 percent, marking its highest level since August 2024. Economists from St. Galler Kantonalbank (SGKB) forecast that inflation could climb above 1 percent in the autumn. Dominik Schmidlin, head of investment strategy at SGKB, noted that while this rise may appear to be a new wave of inflation, a significant portion is statistical due to the low comparison base from late 2025, when inflation was near zero.
The unexpected rise has led to speculation regarding the Swiss National Bank (SNB) and its upcoming interest rate decision. Some experts suggest the SNB might increase the key interest rate from 0 percent to 0.25 percent as early as this coming Thursday. However, other market analysts suggest that SNB President Martin Schlegel may wait until December at the earliest to raise rates, as markets have already adjusted to expectations of stability and the Swiss economy continues to show growth.
