Swiss International Air Lines faces operational challenges from geopolitical crises

Swiss International Air Lines is facing significant operational challenges due to overlapping geopolitical crises. CEO Jens Fehlinger stated that the conflict in the Middle East is forcing the airline to use longer flight paths due to closed airspaces, necessitating constant adjustments to flight planning.

In addition to airspace restrictions over Russia, Ukraine, and the Middle East, the airline is grappling with rising fuel costs. Fehlinger noted that oil prices have fluctuated and, at times, nearly doubled since the start of the war, which is expected to impact the company's annual financial results.

Other contributing factors include extreme weather conditions, such as high temperatures and storms, which affect airport operations. While seeking more stable conditions at Zurich Airport to maintain competitiveness, Fehlinger emphasized that Swiss remains a strong, independent company and will continue its profitable cooperation with Lufthansa regarding fuel supply and flight reservations.
