Switzerland economy shows strong trade performance and market resilience

Switzerland's economy demonstrated robust international trade activity during the third quarter of 2026. According to data from the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG), exports rose by 2.6 percent to 75 billion Swiss francs, while imports reached a record high of 61 billion francs. The pharmaceutical, chemical, and machinery sectors remained primary drivers of this growth, with the chemical and pharmaceutical industry accounting for over half of total exports.

The Swiss watch industry also reported positive trends, with exports growing 2.7 percent to 19.5 billion francs in the first nine months of the year. While demand surged in the United States and Europe, there was a notable regional divergence, as exports to China declined amid a slowing economy.

On the financial front, the Swiss Market Index (SMI) showed resilience, closing up 0.76 percent at 14,478.37 points. Investors favored defensive heavyweights, such as Roche, as sentiment regarding technology and artificial intelligence stocks remained cautious due to concerns over investment returns and rising financing costs.
