Swiss Medical admits medical test error in Maradona death trial
Swiss Medical, an Argentine health insurance provider, has admitted to a significant administrative error during the trial regarding the death of football legend Diego Maradona. The company confirmed in a letter that several medical laboratory tests presented as evidence were mistakenly filed under the name of the footballer, when they actually belonged to his father, Diego Salustiano Maradona, who passed away in 2015.
The error occurred because, prior to 2015, the company’s Labcore system required manual data entry and lacked integrated digital medical records. During the father's admission, the name “Armando” was erroneously added to his profile, causing his records to merge with those of his son in the database.
This mix-up has caused a one-week suspension of the trial, as the defense argues that medical experts, specifically a nephrologist, may have based critical analyses of Maradona’s kidney health on the wrong data. While Swiss Medical noted that the tests can be distinguished by individual member or clinical history numbers, the court must now determine the impact this error has on the conclusions reached by the medical commission investigating the alleged negligence of the seven healthcare professionals on trial.
