Swiss medical technology sector faces investment decline despite revenue growth
The Swiss medical technology sector is experiencing a divergence between revenue growth and investment attractiveness. According to a study by Swiss Medtech, the sector's annual turnover has grown by 5.5% over the last two years, a rate twice as high as the overall Swiss economy. However, the industry faces declining attractiveness, characterized by stagnant employment and a lack of investment, with 43% of companies planning no new investments.
Swiss Medtech is calling on policymakers to reduce administrative burdens and eliminate superfluous formalities to maintain the country's competitiveness.
In a related development regarding the broader life sciences sector, data from BAK Economics highlights the significant economic impact of life sciences in French-speaking Switzerland. Between 2015 and 2025, the real added value of the sector in this region quadrupled, with an average annual growth of approximately 15%. The sector's productivity per employee is reported to be more than three times the regional average, contributing significantly to the regional economy through direct value added and supporting thousands of additional jobs in related industries.
