Swiss mountain railways report growth in 2026 summer season

Swiss mountain railways reported a positive summer season through the end of August 2026. According to data from the industry association Seilbahnen Schweiz (SBS), first-time entries increased by 7% compared to the previous year, and 27% above the five-year average. The Berner Oberland region saw particularly strong growth of 21%.

High temperatures and increased sunshine in July and August contributed to these figures. While there was a decline in visitors from Asia, this was compensated for by strong demand from domestic travelers, neighboring countries, and a notable increase from North American markets.

In the broader travel sector, Swiss travelers continue to seek warmth. Despite a hot summer in Switzerland, autumn holiday bookings show a preference for Mediterranean destinations such as Greece and Mallorca. Additionally, bookings for Tunisia saw a significant increase of 120% compared to 2023.
