Swiss mountain railways report significant increase in summer visitors
Swiss mountain railways experienced a strong summer season in 2026, with first-time visitors increasing by 10% compared to the previous year. This figure represents a 28% rise over the five-year average, according to data from the Swiss Cable Car Association (SBS).
The growth was observed across various regions and altitudes, rather than being limited to specific destinations. The Bernese Oberland recorded the highest growth at 22%, followed by Graubünden with a 13% increase, the Vaud and Fribourg Alps at 10%, and Central Switzerland at 7%.
While pleasant weather in September supported demand for hiking and leisure activities, the SBS noted that the trend is driven by more than just weather. Continuous investments in adventure, biking, and hiking offerings have helped establish summer as an increasingly vital business period for mountain railway companies.
