Swiss National Bank monitors heat impact on food prices

Swiss National Bank (SNB) Chairman Martin Schlegel stated that while unusually hot and dry summer weather has impacted food prices, the recent rise in Swiss inflation is almost exclusively driven by higher petroleum product costs.

Switzerland’s annual inflation rate doubled in August, reaching its highest level in nearly two years. This increase has raised concerns regarding potential harvest reductions and lower water levels on major transport routes, such as the Rhine and Danube, which could further pressure food costs. However, Schlegel noted that the central bank expects the current inflationary spike to be temporary.

The SNB recently maintained its benchmark interest rate at 0%, a decision that contrasts with other central banks raising borrowing costs to combat energy-linked inflation. Schlegel expressed confidence that price growth will remain within the SNB’s target range of 0% to 2% through mid-2029, anticipating that the impact of high crude oil prices will gradually diminish as prices fall.
