Mass Celebrated at San Gottardo Pass Draws 1,500 Pilgrims
On 1 August 2026, a Catholic Mass was held at the San Gottardo Pass to mark Switzerland’s National Day. The celebration was presided over by Monsignor Alain de Raemy, apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Lugano, and co‑celebrated by Bishops Jean‑Marie Lovey, Joseph Maria Bonnemain and emeritus prelates.
Around 1,500 faithful ascended to the 2,100‑metre altitude, some arriving on a special train and organized buses, while a group walked from Motto Bartola beginning at 07:30. The event was produced by Bruno Boccaletti for RSI and was broadcast live on RSI, with retransmissions on SRF and RTS.
Weather was mixed, with wind and sunshine giving way to clouds and a chill near the end. Attendees wore red patriotic caps, including a notable one worn by Swiss President Guy Parmelin, evoking the iconic MAGA hat. The liturgy featured the diocesan choir, a brass quartet, and Alpine horn players, creating a solemn atmosphere amid the mountain scenery.
