Switzerland prepares for key votes on neutrality and food security
Switzerland is preparing for several significant federal votes. On September 27, voters will decide on a neutrality initiative aimed at clarifying the country's armed neutrality in the Constitution. Supporters, including SVP figures like Christoph Blocher, argue the initiative is necessary to define clear boundaries for international policy and prevent the country from being drawn into foreign conflicts.
On the same day, the 'Food Initiative' will be put to a vote. This proposal seeks to increase Switzerland's net self-sufficiency to at least 70% by shifting agricultural focus toward plant-based production and reducing pesticide use. The initiative has faced intense debate; Federal Councilor Guy Parmelin criticized the goals as 'almost impossible' and accused proponents of spreading misinformation during televised debates.
Additionally, the political party Le Centre has launched its campaign for the 2027 federal elections, aiming for a second seat on the Federal Council. The party also issued recommendations for upcoming votes on November 29, supporting the financing of the 13th AVS pension through a VAT increase and the easing of laws regarding the export of military equipment.
