Swiss plum harvest projected at 3,600 tonnes for 2026

Switzerland's plum (Zwetschge) production covers about 320 hectares, with an expected 2026 harvest of roughly 3,600 tonnes, slightly above the five‑year average. Each Swiss resident consumes around 1.5 kg of plums annually. The Valais region is the largest growing area, followed by Vaud and the Basel cantons. The dominant variety is the Fellenberg plum, introduced over two centuries ago and accounting for about one‑third of the national crop. The fruit is named after Philipp Emanuel von Fellenberg, a Bernese reformer and agronomist who promoted its cultivation. Globally, China leads plum production, the United States is second, and Germany is the top European producer.

The Swiss Fruit Association (SOV) reports that the 2026 season, which began in late July and runs to early September, is on track despite regional weather variations that can shift the harvest period.
