Swiss police departments hold swearing-in ceremonies for new officers
Several Swiss police departments recently held ceremonies to swear in new officers and celebrate career advancements.
In Schaffhausen, ten new police officers took their oaths at St. Johann Church on September 24, 2026. The ceremony, led by Government President Dr. Cornelia Stamm Hurter, also marked the transition of five trainees into their practical training year. Police Commander Philipp Maier emphasized the importance of recruiting well-trained personnel to provide new perspectives to the corps.
In Chur, the City Police held a ceremony on September 25, 2026, to swear in four police trainees following their completion of the Eastern Switzerland Police School. Additionally, five employees were sworn in, including three who successfully completed their two-year training and federal professional examinations. The event also included internal promotions related to new functions and leadership roles.
Historical records from the Zurich Cantonal Police highlight the long-standing tradition of these ceremonies, noting that formal swearing-in processes have been a significant milestone in police training for decades, dating back to at least 1941.
