Swiss police warn of dangerous choking challenges among youth

Swiss police in the cantons of Schwyz and Zürich are issuing urgent warnings regarding the “choking challenge” or “blackout challenge” circulating among children and adolescents. These activities involve applying pressure to the neck to induce a brief “kick” or unconsciousness, which can rapidly lead to life-threatening situations.

In Dübendorf, a 15-year-old boy lost consciousness during such a stunt on Wednesday, September 23, 2026. A 14-year-old involved in the incident is being reported to the youth prosecutor's office. Authorities emphasize that even when participants appear to consent, the risk of sudden unconsciousness, brain oxygen deprivation, airway injury, or uncontrolled falls is extremely high.

Police advise parents and caregivers to speak with children about dangerous internet trends and to monitor for signs of injury, such as neck bruising. They stress that choking is never a game and can result in permanent health damage or death.
