Italy June 2026 inflation drops to 3%, consumer basket up 1.3%

Istat reported that Italy’s consumer price index (NIC) showed a year‑on‑year increase of 3 % in June 2026, down from 3.2 % in May. The “consumer basket” (carrello della spesa) grew only 1.3 % annually, reflecting a modest slowdown in overall inflation.

Price dynamics showed a decline in non‑processed food (+5.5 % to +4.4 %), recreational and personal‑care services (+3.0 % to +2.7 %), and transport services (+1.7 % to +1.1 %). Energy prices continued to rise, with regulated energy up from +5.6 % to +9.2 % and non‑regulated energy from +12.5 % to +13.3 %. Core inflation (excluding energy and fresh food) fell slightly to 1.6 %, and core‑energy inflation to 1.9 %.

The slowdown affected both goods and services, which posted annual growth of 3.3 % and 2.6 % respectively. However, households with lower spending levels saw a higher impact, with core CPI rising 3.7 % for low‑spending families versus 2.6 % for higher‑spending families. The data suggest that price pressures remain stronger for lower‑income households, even as overall inflation eases.
