Swiss rail network faces widespread disruption
Switzerland’s railway network experienced significant service disruptions on Friday, October 23, due to two simultaneous incidents. An incident involving a person near Aarau forced the suspension of services on a key corridor linking Zurich, Bern, and western Switzerland. This caused major interruptions between Aarau and Rupperswil, prompting Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) to implement diversions via Basel and Lucerne and arrange replacement buses.
Compounding the situation, severe weather and heavy rain caused power failures on the Lausanne–Geneva line near Renens. Reports indicate that construction panels may have fallen during the storm, contributing to the outage. These combined events led to widespread cancellations and delays for commuters and international travelers across major hubs including Zurich, Bern, Geneva, and Lausanne.
