Swiss researchers develop index to measure biofunctional age

Swiss researchers have developed a preliminary index to assess functional health through the concept of biofunctional age (BFA), also known as bio-psychosocial age. Published in the journal Scientific Reports, the study suggests that BFA provides a multidimensional measure of aging that goes beyond chronological years by integrating physical, emotional-social, and cognitive-mental domains.

Unlike molecular measures that focus on cellular aging, BFA reflects an individual's functional capacity. The research highlights that lifestyle factors—including smoking status, body mass index (BMI), dietary habits, physical activity, and alcohol consumption—are significant determinants of healthy aging. Specifically, regular physical activity, abstinence from smoking, and maintaining a healthy BMI are associated with better aging outcomes.

This research arrives as the global proportion of people aged 60 and older is projected to reach 22% by 2050. The findings align with the Decade of Healthy Aging 2021–2030 initiative, which emphasizes social inclusion, mental and physical health, and economic well-being to improve the lives of older populations.
