Swiss riders get new airbag cycling suit and reinforced motorcycle gear

Van Rysel, Decathlon’s cycling brand, unveiled a prototype airbag racing suit for WorldTour cyclists. Developed with French airbag specialist In&motion, the suit includes six sensors that analyse the rider’s posture 1,000 times per second and deploy an airbag over the chest and collarbones within 60 milliseconds of a crash. A wind‑tunnel test with Swiss aerodynamics experts and climate‑chamber trials are planned before road testing with the Decathlon CMA CGM team.

The Swiss Touring Club (TCS) reminded riders that full protective equipment remains essential in hot weather. In 2025, Swiss road statistics reported 49 deaths and 1,085 serious injuries involving motorcycles and scooters, with riders accounting for 23 % of traffic fatalities. TCS advises use of certified helmets, leather or ventilated protective clothing, and optional airbag vests that shield the torso and back, emphasizing that brief discomfort is far less serious than injuries from a crash.
