Switzerland announced the retirement of veteran midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri from international football. The 34‑year‑old, who has earned 125 caps, scored 32 goals and appeared in four World Cups, said he will step away after Euro 2024, leaving the Swiss squad without one of its most experienced attackers for the 2026 tournament.

Former Italy captain and 2006 World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro has taken over as head coach of Uzbekistan ahead of their debut at the 2026 World Cup. The 52‑year‑old, who has coached clubs in China, Saudi Arabia, Italy and Croatia, will lead the team in Group K, opening against Colombia at the Estadio Azteca. Uzbekistan, currently ranked 51st by FIFA, hope the new leadership will elevate their performance on football’s biggest stage.
