Swiss striker Breel Embolo scores penalty in World Cup 2026 opener

Swiss forward Breel Embolo gave his team a 1‑0 lead early in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026, converting a penalty after a foul on teammate Remo Freuler at Levi Stadium in San Francisco. VAR confirmed the decision and the Swiss side held the advantage against Qatar.

Embolo, born in Yaoundé, Cameroon and naturalised as a Swiss citizen in 2014, has become a prominent example of migrant athletes representing European national teams. His club career includes spells at FC Basel, Schalke 04, Borussia Mönchengladbach and AS Monaco. He previously scored the decisive goal against Cameroon in the 2022 World Cup, opting not to celebrate out of respect for his birthplace. His continued presence reflects Switzerland’s reliance on players with dual backgrounds to fuel its consistent World Cup qualifications.
