Swiss transport policy: Calls for road expansion and infrastructure upgrades

Swiss political figures and regional coalitions are calling for significant expansions to the national road network. In Appenzell Ausserrhoden, a coalition representing local industry, tourism, and politics is demanding that the federal government accelerate the construction of the Herisau bypass on the N25 national highway. They are requesting the project be moved from the 2055 realization horizon to 2045 to alleviate traffic congestion, noise, and safety issues.

Simultaneously, SVP transport politician and truck entrepreneur Benjamin Giezendanner has criticized the federal government's current approach. Giezendanner argues that Switzerland's infrastructure, designed for a much smaller population, is heading toward a collapse. He has called for more highway expansion, fewer speed limit zones in cities, and a focus on maintaining existing rail infrastructure before funding new projects.
