Swiss SVP candidates surge for Guy Parmelin's Federal Council seat

The Swiss People's Party (SVP/UDC) has experienced a sudden influx of candidates seeking to succeed Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin. Following a period of few applicants, several nominations were announced shortly before the deadline, leading Swiss media to describe the process as having "skurrile Episoden" (bizarre episodes) and "verrückten Stunden" (crazy hours).

As of the application deadline, approximately seven to eight candidates have emerged. Notable names include Céline Amaudruz and Rémy Wyssmann, who were early applicants, and Pierre Alain Schnegg, whose candidacy for the French-speaking region surprised some party members. Other contenders include Jean-Pierre Gallati, Franz Ruppen, and Marco Chiesa, who has been proposed by the Ticino SVP. Additionally, the Zug SVP has proposed parliamentary group leader Thomas Aeschi, though he has not yet made a final decision on whether to run.

Several potential candidates have declined to run. Franz Grüter cited family reasons for his withdrawal, and Thomas Matter announced he would not seek the seat. The selection process will involve an internal party commission, followed by a parliamentary group vote on November 20, and a final election by the Federal Assembly in early December. The party intends to use themes of asylum, neutrality, and relations with Europe to evaluate its candidates.
