Swissair collapse: 25 years since the grounding of the national carrier
Twenty-five years after the sudden grounding of Swissair on October 2, 2001, the event remains a defining moment in Swiss economic history. The national carrier suffered a total operational collapse due to a lack of liquidity, leaving approximately 260 aircraft grounded worldwide and approximately 19,000 passengers stranded.
The crisis was driven by the SAir-Group’s internal financial structure, specifically a zero-balance cash-pooling system. This mechanism required subsidiaries to transfer all daily surplus liquidity to the parent company every evening, which systematically drained operational funds from essential support units. When the parent company froze, subsidiaries like Swissport, Gate Gourmet, and SR Technics were left without the capital needed to pay suppliers.
The collapse also severely impacted Zurich Airport, as commercial banks revoked credit lines due to fears that the airline’s bankruptcy would destabilize the hub. In the decades since, the aviation landscape at Zurich has transformed; while Swissair disappeared, SWISS has emerged as the dominant carrier, handling roughly half of the airport's passengers.
