Swiss‑Italian Documentary ‘A Prodigiosa Transformação da Classe Operária em Estrangeiros’ Opens in Portuguese Cinemas

The documentary *A Prodigiosa Transformação da Classe Operária em Estrangeiros* tells the story of Samir (Samar Jamal al‑Din), a filmmaker born in Baghdad to an Iraqi father and Swiss mother. Drawing on personal memories, archival photos and footage, the film traces the decline of Swiss worker solidarity from the 1960s onward, when Swiss trade unions and the Social‑Democratic Party shifted policy toward Italian migrants, reclassifying many laborers as “foreigners.” Critics note the film’s dense information load but credit its examination of a complex European labor‑migration history.

The movie is scheduled for a week‑long run in Portuguese cinemas from 22 July to 28 July, as listed in local programming guides. This release gives Portuguese audiences an opportunity to engage with the Swiss‑Italian perspective on class and migration.

The film combines oral history with visual documentation to illustrate how economic and political changes reshaped the identity of the working class in Switzerland.
