Switzerland adopts 2026 Security Policy Strategy to counter rising threats

The Swiss Federal Council has adopted the 2026 Security Policy Strategy, a comprehensive plan designed to address an increasingly unstable international security environment. The strategy identifies Russia’s war against Ukraine as a turning point that has fundamentally changed the security landscape for Switzerland.

The policy outlines 10 objectives and 46 specific measures aimed at strengthening the resilience of the state, economy, and society. Key priorities include defending against hybrid threats—such as cyberattacks, disinformation, and espionage—as well as protecting critical infrastructure from sabotage and long-range weapons like drones and ballistic missiles.

Beyond military defense, the strategy emphasizes reducing critical dependencies and improving the protection of civilians and institutions. While officials consider a direct armed attack on Switzerland to be unlikely in the near future, the plan focuses on enhancing defense capabilities to respond effectively to potential threats and ensuring better cooperation with partner states.
