Switzerland advances bid for 2038 Winter Olympics

Switzerland is advancing its bid to host the 2038 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Science, Education and Culture Commission of the National Council has expressed support for the candidacy with a vote of 21 to 2.

Under the proposed plan, the federal government would provide up to 200 million Swiss francs in support, provided that cantons and municipalities contribute an equal amount. The organizing committee envisions total costs of approximately 2.2 billion Swiss francs, to be funded through public funds, the International Olympic Committee, sponsorship, and merchandising. The committee aims to provide a privately financed deficit guarantee of 200 million francs.

The commission has set several conditions for the support, including adherence to high national and international standards for sustainability, transparency, and governance. Specific requirements include emphasizing public transport for travel and implementing a social and cultural charter. The games are intended to be decentralized, with competitions spread across various locations to promote national cohesion and benefit youth and sports.
