Switzerland advances digital sovereignty and biometric ID rollout
Switzerland is advancing its digital transformation through several key initiatives focused on security and legal frameworks. At a recent meeting of the Digital Switzerland Advisory Board, officials emphasized that digital sovereignty and the introduction of the electronic identity (E-ID) must prioritize security and trust. Consequently, the Federal Department of Justice and Police has postponed the E-ID rollout to implement enhanced technical safeguards against malware and deepfakes.
In the realm of identity documents, a new biometric identity card featuring a chip with facial images and fingerprints will be available starting November 2, 2026. While the biometric version is recommended for EU travel, citizens may still opt for the traditional non-chip version for domestic use. Applications for the new card must be processed through specific cantonal offices or Swiss representations abroad.
Additionally, the Zurich Cantonal Council has approved legal changes to enable digital judicial proceedings. Despite opposition from the SVP and EDU parties, who cited concerns regarding centralization and cybersecurity risks, the measure passed with 129 votes to 45, aligning the canton with federal legal developments.
