Switzerland advances public AI infrastructure and enterprise adoption

Switzerland is advancing two distinct approaches to artificial intelligence: state-backed public infrastructure and increased enterprise adoption of commercial tools.

The Apertus initiative is developing a Swiss AI model designed to serve as public infrastructure. Unlike commercial models driven by private profit, Apertus focuses on being open, inspectable, and useful for researchers, governments, and businesses. The project emphasizes legal safeguards and data sovereignty, having removed over 2.5 million documents to respect creator opt-outs under the EU AI Act.

Simultaneously, Swiss enterprises are accelerating the adoption of Microsoft AI and cloud services. Research from Information Services Group indicates that Swiss companies are prioritizing stronger governance frameworks, data management, and managed services to control AI spending and ensure operational transparency. This shift toward governed AI operations is driving demand for cloud infrastructure and specialized service providers.
