Switzerland announces funding for cultural research and Ukraine reconstruction
The Swiss government has announced two distinct funding initiatives. The Swiss Federal Office of Culture is providing $2.4 million to support 26 research projects focused on the provenance of cultural artifacts held in Swiss museums. These projects, scheduled for 2027–2028, will investigate items acquired through colonial, archaeological, and Nazi-era contexts. Notable projects include a collaboration between the Natural History Museum in Basel and Gadjah Mada University to trace 189 Indonesian human remains, and a joint effort by nine Swiss museums to research over 6,300 artifacts from Cameroon.
Separately, the Swiss Federal Council has approved approximately $162 million (135 million Swiss francs) for reconstruction projects in Ukraine. This funding will be managed by Swiss enterprises operating within Ukraine to reinforce the country’s energy grid, public transit, and municipal water management systems. The program aims to address infrastructure damage caused by Russian air strikes and includes technical cooperation to train Ukrainian engineering specialists and stabilize the local workforce.
