Switzerland approves additional funds for F-35 fighter jet procurement

The Swiss National Council has approved an additional credit of approximately 400 million Swiss francs for the procurement of F-35A fighter jets. This follows revelations that the previously promised fixed price for the aircraft was not legally binding, rendering the original 6 billion franc budget insufficient for the planned 36 jets.

A report from the Business Audit Commission (GPK) clarified that the fixed-price assumption was inaccurate, contradicting previous statements made by former Federal Councillor Viola Amherd. Consequently, the current funding will cover at least 30 jets rather than the original 36.

The situation has sparked intense political debate regarding financial and security policy negligence within the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (VBS). Critics have described the procurement process as a “debacle” and expressed concerns over the credibility of the department and the necessity of the high-cost stealth fighters for Swiss national security.
