Bern Youth Arrested After Threatening Shop Detectives with Knife
On Thursday afternoon a teenager attempted to steal merchandise from a shop in Bern's city centre. When store security staff confronted him, he brandished a kitchen knife and threatened the two shop detectives. He fled, running through several streets of the historic old town.
The Bern cantonal police launched an immediate pursuit, coordinating patrol units and city police. The suspect was intercepted near the Bern train station's short‑term parking area, where he was detained. Officers recovered the knife and stolen goods valued at over 600 Swiss francs. The youth, who had previously left a measures centre in the canton of Zurich, is now facing charges of serious theft, attempted dangerous bodily injury and resistance to state authority.
The Kantonspolizei Bern emphasized a zero‑tolerance policy for violence against security personnel and said the investigation is ongoing, with the case to be presented to the youth prosecution office.
