Switzerland considers speed limit reduction to combat fuel shortages

The Swiss Federal Office for Economic Affairs (BWL) is considering a proposal to reduce highway speed limits from 120 km/h to 80 km/h in the event of severe fuel shortages. The measure aims to reduce fuel consumption and extend the availability of national reserves.

While a final decision has not been reached, the proposal has undergone initial review within the state administration. The potential measure would complement existing protocols, such as the recent authorization to draw 45 million liters of diesel from mandatory state reserves, which was triggered by heavy rainfall in southern France affecting pipeline transport.

Other factors contributing to supply tensions include a technical failure at the Cressier refinery, the only one in Switzerland, and low water levels in the Rhine due to prolonged drought, which has impacted transport capabilities.
