Switzerland customs rules for meat and food imports

Travelers entering Switzerland must adhere to specific customs regulations regarding meat and processed food imports to avoid significant additional costs. Each person is permitted to bring one kilogram of meat per day duty-free. For quantities exceeding this limit, customs duties apply: up to ten kilograms of excess meat incurs a fee of 17 Swiss francs per kilogram, while amounts exceeding ten kilograms are taxed at 23 Swiss francs per kilogram.

These regulations extend to sausages and processed foods containing more than 20 percent meat, sausage, or blood. In such cases, the weight of the entire dish is used for calculation. Exemptions include fish, crustaceans, mollusks, game, marrow bones, and sauces. Pet food is also exempt if sold in individual, clearly labeled packages.

Travelers using Zurich Airport, particularly those returning to Germany, should remain aware that they are transitioning through two different legal jurisdictions. While Switzerland is part of the Schengen Area, it is not part of the European Union, meaning different import rules apply when moving from Switzerland into the EU.
