Switzerland denies Ebola patient in Nigeria traveled to DR Congo
The Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that a Swiss national, the spouse of a diplomat based in Abuja, has tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola in Nigeria. The Swiss government clarified that the patient and her husband recently traveled to Uganda but did not visit the Democratic Republic of the Congo, despite claims from Ugandan authorities suggesting otherwise.
The patient developed symptoms on October 7 and tested positive on October 20. She is currently hospitalized in a private clinic in Abuja, while her husband remains in isolation without symptoms. Nigerian authorities have identified 44 individuals who were in contact with her.
This marks the first Ebola case in Nigeria in over a decade. The outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain, which began in northeastern DR Congo in May, has now spread to four African countries: DR Congo, Uganda, Kenya, and Nigeria. The Africa CDC reports that the outbreak has caused approximately 4,700 confirmed deaths. Both the World Health Organization and Africa CDC have stated they have no confirmed information regarding travel to the Congo for this specific patient.
